FORMS OF TOURISM

Tourists travel for different purposes and hence different form of tourism, namely:-

·         Cultural tourism: - it uses culture of a people as the main attraction.
·     Mass tourism: - it is whereby tourists visit an area in large numbers after buying packaged holidays. They book and travel as group in order to bargain for discounts as well as minimize costs.
·        Eco – tourism: - it is the type of tourism that seeks to maximize tourism benefits at the same time causing minimal environmental disturbance.
·         Sports tourism: - it is based on travel to participate in sporting events as participants or as fans.
·    Pilgrimage: - travel to sites of religious importance i.e. Mecca by Muslims, Jerusalem by Christians e.t.c
·     Agro - tourism: - it uses agriculture as an attraction and includes plantations, ranching and irrigations as the attractions.
·         Domestic tourism: - people travel to visit various touristic attractions found within the borders of their own country.
·      International tourism: - travel for touristic purpose across international borders into another country.
·        Wildlife tourism: - tours for the purpose of viewing fauna and flora i.e mammals, birds, plants e.t.c
·         Beach tourism: - travel is based at the coastal areas for ocean related activities such as surfing, sand bathing, swimming, fishing and cruising.
·         Medical and health tourism travel is necessitated by the need for treatment of various diseases and health promotion after diseases i.e. to treat any severe diseases, rehabilitation of injuries, accidents, surgeries and rounds of therapeutic e.t.c.
·         Business travel: - This type of tourism WTO classifies as travel to participate in congresses, scientific congresses and conferences, production meetings and seminars, trade fairs, exhibitions, saloons, and for the negotiation and conclusion of contracts, installation and commissioning of equipment.
·         Educational tourisminvolves tours to upgrade skills or improve knowledge on various subjects such as educational tours to study foreign languages.
